Recently, I found myself chasing a persistent buzz on one of my guitars. It wasn’t fret buzz. It wasn’t the bridge. And it wasn’t coming from the strings themselves. It had that frustrating quality of being everywhere and nowhere at once. Sound familiar? As someone who teaches guitar to students mostly over 40, I know how important it is to keep our instruments playing comfortably. Most of us aren’t looking for flashy speed solos—we want clean, clear tone and a guitar that feels right in the hands. So when mine started acting up, I had to get to the bottom of it. I started checking the usual suspects—loose screws, uneven frets, neck relief, string height—but everything seemed fine. That’s when I looked a bit closer at the headstock and noticed something strange. Two of the machine head spacers (those little washers in the tuner mechanism) were completely flattened. At first, I didn’t think much of it. But after doing a bit of digging, I learned that those tiny pieces of metal or plastic actually play a vital role in your guitar’s performance. What Do Machine Head Spacers Do? - [Your First 6 Guitar Lessons - Free Course (sign up)](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/your-first-6-guitar-lessons-free-course-sign-up/): Your First 6 Guitar Lessons....Free Course has landed Are you looking for a decent taster of what your first guitar lessons would look like with a teacher? Should you learn it?](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/whats-tab-whys-it-upside-down-should-you-learn-it/): Should you learn to read Tab or not? Is it useful, useless, cheating, upside down?  There’s a lot of mixed noise. I’m a fan. Here’s why…. What is TAB? Tab is short for Tablature.  It's a form of musical notation. It differs from traditional notation as it doesn’t use note values, pitches and a stave / staff.  Should you learn to read Tab?  Whether you should  learn to read tab really depends on your goals as a guitarist and based on the information above looking at what Tab has to offer.  If you’re planning on being a well-rounded or professional musician ideally, a balanced approach is best. Learning both Tab and standard notation can give you the most flexibility and understanding of music. However, if you're just starting out or primarily interested in playing popular music, learning tab is a great first step. Genres like Classical and Jazz guitar prioritise Standard Notation. If you don’t respond well to written learning materials it may not be a great avenue to go down but on the flipside it may be more appealing due to its graphic, map-like nature. - [Learning Guitar for beginners in 2025](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/learning-guitar-for-beginners-in-2025-12-steps/): In a world of guitar playing ‘rabbit holes’, learning plateaus and information overload … Here’s how to make sure you start 2025 excited, refreshed and in-motion so that you still have an appetite for it in 6 months.  Part 1 - The Prep THE PREPARATION (get your head in the right place with these first 5 steps)  What these steps do is get you mentally prepared so you at least have an anchor and a sense of direction. There are so many options of tuners these days and honestly I'm so used to my ultra-reliable Boss TU-2 that I don't have much of a need to go elsewhere.  However, I've been looking for a decent clip-on tuner for a while and the TC Polytune Clip piqued my interest... I've seen it a LOT.  It can happen for a few reasons: A lack of awareness - sometimes beginners don't realise the guitar needs tuning Underdeveloped ear skills - some people don't hear that it's out of tune Lack of care - Not being bothered. Don't think it's important - some don't care Don't have a tuner - waiting for others to do it Lack of confidence - some beginners don't think they can or are too shy to have a go so wait for others to do it for them This is one of the most basic, initial skills / practises to get into the habit of for guitar learners. Self- reliance. Don't wait for someone else to do it or to tell you. These are 9 very worthwhile reasons to INVEST in and create the habit of TUNING YOUR GUITAR: - [How to build chords from scales - C Major | Music Theory](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/how-to-build-chords-from-scales-c-major-music-theory/): Learning how to build chords using the notes from scales is one of the most useful things I ever learned in music theory.  It has joined so many dots together for me that I urge people to learn how to do this if they are at all interested in the theory side of playing an instrument. Starting with Major Scales.  C Major to be specific.  Our Major Scale contains 7 notes (8 including the Octave): C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C This means we can create 7 different 3-note chords using these notes. One chord starting on each of the 7 notes. (We can do more but today we're just looking at the foundations). We do this by taking alternate notes and grouping them together - [8 things every guitarist wants AND needs (useful gift ideas)](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/8-things-every-guitarist-wants-and-needs-useful-gift-ideas/): There are gadgets and gimmicks and things that look useful but the reality is not all of the things that protest to be useful additions to a guitarists kit are.... LEARN THE CHORDS IN A KEY - [Strumming Dynamics:  Add depth to your guitar playing (3 Ways)](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/strumming-dynamics-add-depth-to-your-guitar-playing-3-ways/): When we’re first learning to strum we have to master the basics.  It’s enough as a beginner to get our heads (and hands) around remembering the order of up and down strums, how many of them to play and how they’re spaced (counted).  Once we can remember this we have to repeat (repeat, repeat and again….REPEAT)  the process until we have it nailed and can play it automatically (can you play your rhythm whilst talking to someone or watching TV?). Great. Now it’s time to really start…. The next step is important.  It’s where we breathe life into a song and how you take your guitar playing from a beginner to a more experienced level. This is to do with the way we play the rhythm.  The FEEL…. - [Tuning Your Guitar: A Beginner's Guide (how and why)](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/tuning-your-guitar-a-beginners-guide-how-and-why/): Tuning your guitar is a fundamental skill that every beginner musician should learn. When your guitar is in tune you'll be able to play chords, riffs, melodies and solos accurately.  When your guitar is out of tune everything will sound terrible, and 'off'. Learning guitar has layers of challenges.  One thing that can make it harder is feeling powerless to put your guitar in tune by yourself or feeling like everything sounds rubbish, when it might be as simple as putting your G string back in tune. Let's make sure that your guitar sounds 'right'... A simple guide to help you get started: - [Beginners Guide to Learning Guitar](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/beginners-guide-to-learning-guitar/): So, you've decided to embark on the exciting journey of learning to play the guitar! In 1971 it was posthumously released performed by Janis Joplin.   This is the version I'll be referencing today.  I'm a fan of looking at the way songs are played, written and recorded. I recently recorded a guitar tutorial for this song and it got me thinking about how simple chord sequences can be used to build a song. Today is a bite-sized look into a common technique used to help a song build. Why do we used a Key Change? - [How to work out the speed of a song by ear? Beginner Guitarist](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/how-to-work-out-the-speed-of-a-song-by-ear-beginner-guitarist/): How do you work out the speed of a song? This is a common question I hear from guitar students.   Knowing when to strum or if the strumming pattern you are practising is at the right speed is a real right of passage.  It's a super skill to develop and as you work on it, it will become like second nature. No more guessing... This is aimed at beginner level guitarists. We're not looking at calculating the bpm just yet.  We're looking to develop an ear first.  - [TRIADS - How are Open Chords related to Triads? (Guitar Theory)](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/understanding-triads/): Triad Foundations - Unlocking Chords and Understanding Triads Triads are a huge point of conversation when it comes to guitar learners. They are a major buzz word. Today we'll look at how open chords and triads are related. My aim is to demystify them a little bit for you. It's easy enough to learn triad shapes and remember where they go on the fretboard but what really unlocks this topic is understanding certain elements of Theory (and the guitar fretboard). That will help you to work them out for yourself. Questions answered today: WHAT IS A TRIAD? WHY ARE TRIADS IMPORTANT? - [My Teaching YouTube Channel featured! I has been released and covered by many awesome artists since then. In 1968 Marvin Gaye release his version and this is the one based on 'feel' we are looking at today. In today's Acoustic Guitar Tutorial we learn Marvin Gayes I Heard It Through The Grapevine. This song has an instantly recognisable intro riff followed by a grooved, sparse strum of simple open guitar chords. In order to talk chords and keys in the set up I have taught the lesson in the open position without a capo. We used chords Dm, G/D, A7, G7, Bm7. I have tabbed out the intro riff and counted out the 4 beat rhythms with charts for the Verse / Pre Chorus / Chorus Strums. I have included chord boxes and graphics to play along with the lesson. The strumming pattern is intended to be sparse and percussively rhythmic as the recording. The intro riff creates an excellent contrast in mellow, flowing notes. - [SURFIN' USA by The Beach Boys (Acoustic Guitar Lesson - Riffs & Chords) - Song Lessons](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/surfin-usa-by-the-beach-boys-acoustic-guitar-lesson-riffs-chords-song-lessons/): Today we learn how to play Surfin' USA by The Beach Boys in this acoustic guitar tutorial. This song from 1963 is one of my favourite Beach Boys songs. It's a great fun, uptempo song sprinkled with rock n roll. There are only actually 3 chords in the song but it has so much more than that going on. The original recording is in Eb but today the lesson is transposed into D to give us more possibilities in how we can play this. It also makes the song much more accessible to a wider range of abilities. We can then put a capo on fret 1 and slide everything we’ve learned up a fret and that will put us back into Eb just like the Beach Boys - [WALKING ON SUNSHINE by Katrina & The Waves (chord strumming lesson) - Song Lessons](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/song-lessons-walking-on-sunshine-by-katrina-the-waves-chord-strumming-lesson/): In 1983 Katrina and The Waves released the awesome, up-beat WALKING ON SUNSHINE. The second thing is I've got another blog bubbling for the near future about common questions that are asked by guitar students. Common situations we have. One of  those is practice and practice routines so I'm really interested in what YOUR thoughts are and what YOUR experiences are because we can all learn from each other by sharing this. Do you have any thoughts on practice?  what you've experienced? what does that word means to you? Time Signature: 4/4 Key: G - [Handle with Care, TRAVELING WILBURYS](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/handle-with-care-traveling-wilburys/): Handle with Care was released by supergroup TRAVELING WILBURYS in 1988.  The group had the legendary membership of Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison & Geoff Lynne. Quite a line-up! This is a great strum & sing song.  I've included tab for the lead guitar riff that happen in the Intro and Verses.  I use this as the intro when I'm playing on acoustic guitar as it's a bit more interesting and reminiscent of the recording.  Time Signature: 4/4 Key: G - [Creep, RADIOHEAD](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/creep-radiohead/): A 90's 4-chord, epic strummer. A must-learn repetitive rhythm classic.  In today's guitar lesson we are doing an acoustic version of Radioheads Creep. What a tune. I have done this version with the capo on fret 3 to give us some open chord options.   I have started off with a more simple chord pattern and then added in the sus4 chords to create the effect you hear in the recording. - [Friday I'm In Love, THE CURE](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/friday-im-in-love-the-cure/): A 90's easy, fun strummer. A must-learn for a good bouncy guitar sing-song In todays guitar lesson we are doing an acoustic version of The Cures 1992 hit Friday I'm in Love Key: D Time Signature: 4/4 Capo: 1 - [Hazy Shade of Winter, SIMON & GARFUNKEL](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/hazy-shade-of-winter-simon-garfunkel/): One of my favourite song intro riffs by Simon & Garfunkel.  Hazy Shade of Winter has an excellent opener and great upbeat energy to strum along to. Written and released in 1968 this song was also a massive hit for The Bangles in 1987. The Version in the lesson today is a strumming version with the addition of the intro riff & a couple of picking embellishments that are revisited throughout the song. Key: Am (relative to the capo and based on chord shapes) | Pitch-wise the song is in Dm Time Signature: 4/4 Capo: 5 - [Hurt, JOHNNY CASH](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/hurt-johnny-cash/): This version of Hurt performed by Johnny Cash is a beautiful, simple, powerful rendition of Trent Reznors song.  Simple, sparse picking pattern, a handful of classic open chords and a straight forward structure.  A real pleasure to play on guitar. - [Dashboard](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/dashboard/) - [Subscribe to an online course](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/subscribe/) - [Santa Baby, Eartha Kit](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/santa-baby-eartha-kit/): SANTA BABY performed by Eartha Kit has become a classic, well-loved and well covered Christmas Hit.   This is a fairly straight forward open chords (with a capo) and a simple strumming pattern.  The song becomes more difficult but fun when we start to add in the bass notes that transition from chord to chord in the intro and verses.  Key: C Capo: 1st Fret Time Signature: 4/4 - [Silent Night (chords in C)](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/silent-night-chords-in-c/): Silent Night is one of my absolute favourite Christmas songs. A beautiful, lullaby-style melody. Sparse and gentle. Today we are looking at a simple 3/4 strumming pattern with some nice open chords.  This is a great song to get some 3/4 strumming practise.  Key: C Time Signature: 3/4 - [Mailing List](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/mailing-list/): sign up to Jo Bywater Guitar Tuition newsletter for exclusive guitar tips and resources direct to your inbox. All value, no spam. - [Take Me Home Country Roads, JOHN DENVER](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/take-me-home-country-roads-john-denver/): TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROADS was written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert & John Denver. It was released by John Denver in 1971.  This song is a great example of easy-pace Country strumming with a short Travis Picking intro and a simple chord sequences.  A very singable song.  In today's Acoustic Guitar Tutorial we are learning how to play John Denvers CLASSIC song Take Me Home, Country Roads. This song is an epic singalong song, a nice pace Country feel. The chords in the lesson are the original ones from the recording: A, F Sharp Minor, E, D, G, E7. - [Landslide, FLEETWOOD MAC](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/landslide-fleetwood-mac/): LANDSLIDE was written by the fabulous Stevie Nicks and released by Fleetwood Mac in 1975. This song is beautiful. Ifs a perfect example of simplicity in chord sequences and structure and is an excellent in-road to practise some classic Travis-styled fingerpicking. Key: Based on the open chord shapes we're in the Key of G.  Once we put the capo on fret 3 it's transposed to the Key of Bb Time Signature: 4/4 Capo: Fret 3 - [The Addams Family Theme](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/the-addams-family-theme/): The Addams Family Theme is perfect for the run up to Halloween.  The recognisable intro, 3 chords and a little creepy rhythm...written by Andrew Gold. Key: Bb Time Signature: 4/4 We start with the original key, this uses 2 barre chords. This positioning also means we can use interim bass notes that precede the chords as in the recording. This gives it a much more bouncy, creeping feel... - [Venus, SHOCKING BLUE](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/venus-shocking-blue/): VENUS was written by Robbie van Leeuwen & released by Dutch rock band Shocking Blue in 1969. This song has an amazing distinctive intro chord strum using a B7sus4 chord and is a perfect example of rhythm study for guitar. Open chords, varied rhythms, a run using E Minor Pentatonic Scale and some power chord slides.  Key: Em  Time Signature: 4/4 - [Knocking on Heavens Door, BOB DYLAN](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/knocking-on-heavens-door-bob-dylan/): Knocking on Heavens Door was written & released by Bob Dylan in 1973 for the film soundtrack, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. This song is a soulfully strummed repeated chord progression using only 4 chords:  G, D, Am & C (I V II IV in the key of G). The same foundational strumming pattern is played throughout with some added variations.  The main focus today is building the foundation and then looking at how the song builds using DYNAMICS in the from of Volume, Accents and Strumming feel. This song is a mixture of a very recognisable picking guitar riff for the Intro and Verses and a more open strummed section for the Choruses.  There is a nifty Time Signature change from 4/4 to 6/8 in the middle section that slows this right down ready for the big build ending. I have included easier strummed alternatives for the Intro & Verse. The song has great energy, its fantastic song to play on guitar and we only need a handful or chords. The Verses are simple , The Chorus is a bit more upbeat . The intro is sparse but with a sprinkling of a couple of techniques it becomes ICONIC... - [Suspicious Minds, ELVIS PRESLEY](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/suspicious-minds-elvis-presley/): Suspicious Minds was released by Elvis Presley in 1969.  It was written by Mark James. What a song... - [Should I Stay Or Should I Go, THE CLASH](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/should-i-stay-or-should-i-go-the-clash/): Should I Stay Or Should I Go was released by The Clash in 1981.  It came into my world in the 90s when it had a resurgence via a British Levis TV Commercial.  This gave it a whole new audience at the time, me being one of those.   The song has great energy, its fantastic song to play on guitar and we only need a handful or chords. The Verses are simple , The Chorus is a bit more upbeat . The intro is sparse but with a sprinkling of a couple of techniques it becomes ICONIC... - [Support my work](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/support-my-work/) - [Guitar Lesson Gift Vouchers](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-lesson-gift-vouchers/) - [Download video lesson song sheet PDFs](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/download-video-lesson-song-sheet-pdfs/) - [My Account](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/my-account/) - [Checkout](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/checkout/) - [Basket](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/basket/) - [Shop](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/shop/) - [Guitar Lessons Stoke-on-Trent](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-lessons-stoke-on-trent/) - [Guitar Lessons Liverpool](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-lessons-liverpool/) - [Guitar Lessons Eccleshall](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-lessons-eccleshall/) - [Guitar Lessons Stafford](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-lessons-stafford/) - [Guitar Grades](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-grades/) - [Intermediate Guitar Lessons](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/intermediate-guitar-lessons-online/) - [Beginner Guitar Lessons](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/beginner-guitar-lessons-online/) - [Testimonials](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/testimonials/) - [Contact](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/contact/) - [About Jo Bywater](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/about-jo-bywater/) - [Blog](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/blog/) - [Guitar PDFs](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-pdfs/) - [Guitar Video Lessons](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-video-lessons/) - [Learning Guitar Resources](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/learning-guitar-resources/) - [Learning Guitar FAQs](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/learning-guitar-faqs/) - [Guitar Lessons](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/guitar-lessons/) - [Book a Guitar Lesson](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/book-a-guitar-lesson/) - [Home](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/) - [Privacy Policy](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/privacy-policy/) ## Products - [Summer Breeze Style — Techniques, Licks, Melodies & Rhythms PDF](https://jobywaterguitartuition.com/product/summer-breeze-style-techniques-licks-melodies-rhythms-pdf/): Learn Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers — chords, picking riff, and lead guitar line in one printable two-page drill sheet. - [One Scale. 5 Drills.
